A lot of fuzz about this mystical 3ds. We want to shed some light on this since it is an important key to understand how the service works.
What is 3-D Secure?
3-D Secure is a protocol designed to be an additional security layer for online credit and debit card transactions. It was originally developed with the intention of improving the security of Internet payments.
Basically, 3-D Secure adds an authentication step for online payments. "3D" stands for 3 Domain - there are 3 parties that are involved in the 3-D Secure process :
- Issuer (the bank which issued the card being used).
- Acquirer (the bank and the merchant to which the money is being paid).
- Interoperability (the infrastructure provided by the card scheme, credit, debit, prepaid or other type of finance card, to support the 3-D Secure protocol).
What cards can be accepted through 3-D Secure?
As 3-D Secure is controlled by VISA and MasterCard the following cards can be used : VISA, VISA Delta, MasterCard, MasterCard Debit, International Maestro, UK Maestro and VISA Electron.
How can I know if my card is already registered in the “3-D Secure” service?
You can ask the issuer of your card whether it supports the 3-D Secure or not.
Alternatively, you will know if your card supports the “3-D Secure” service whenever you are making a purchase and asked to enter your “3-D Secure” password.
